Action Shots: Nature and People Dancing Together
I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, near the beach, and began my love affair with photography by taking pictures of benches and trees and anything that caught my eye. A friend mentioned that I should add people to my shots, and I realized that I needed people to make the photos come alive.
I invested in another camera and a couple of lenses and started taking pictures of the surfers. It got to be a challenge to anticipate their moves in the water. How could I get that shot with perfect backlighting of the wave or the spray as it hit the board? It’s a little like taking a photo of a ballet dancer interacting with a wave. I spent days on the beach, going back and forth to where there were the best waves. I didn’t care who the people were - beginners or experts - I just wanted the best shots.
For a few years while I lived in Santa Cruz, I was on an outrigger team. Because I loved photographing people in the water so much, it was always was a toss-up whether I would race or take pictures of the race!
